Nope. Just an inaccurate gauge, the fuel level sensor reads below a certain voltage/fuel level and lights up. Basically, you could be running low enough, the fuel sloshes around in the tank when you go over a bump or around a corner, and it triggers the low fuel level. Basing it off of a mpg calculation is just dumb.

There are DIY threads that walk you through doing LED swaps. Or find a friend who knows their shit and have them do it (what I did, the all red looks wonderful). I watched him work (thankfully he didnt mind me hovering over his shoulder), and its not horribly difficult to do.
