Like I said above, it may have been his technique or attack points or the fact that the metal was already worked to the point of getting stiff. As noted on the second page of this thread, the bottle jack technique didn’t work and perhaps only acted to make the metal harder. It’s just a guess, but yea, working metal is an art, even when it is not.
