That's a shame you missed that childhood experience.
I was fortunate to have several old time junk yards within the range of my Cushman motor scooter. I got to know the old coots who "managed" them. I would ask them if I could go roam around in their junk yard in trade for me doing some chores that they needed help with, like cleaning out a chicken/hog house or moving some hay.
When I was 14, I got my first car. Then the junkyards became my main source of parts (like @
Tcoat mentioned). Now, to pay for the parts, I would have to work quite a bit longer. Sometimes, all I had to do was pull up and have a seat on a bucket,under a shade tree and listen to several "back-in-the-day" stories.
Now, I'm too damn lazy to change my own oil -
