Lower viscosity oil takes less energy to pump and churn in an engine. Some people think it's bad for the engine or something, but I think it helps on cold starts since it gets flowing faster, at least based on what I've read about oil. Too thick is more of a problem than too thin, because if it's too thick it doesn't flow enough to provide proper lubrication. Something like that at least.
