Don't feel too bad. I mentioned the Pioneer unit I have in our Suburban. I installed it like 5 years ago and could never get it to work with plugged in Android Auto, even though it said it had it. I didn't fight it because the onboard maps were pretty good, and I could stream music or books over bluetooth.
About 6 months ago decided to see if I could get it working because the maps are stupid expensive to update.
Turns out it didn't work because the USB cables I bought to run from the back of the headunit to the dash were NOT data cables. Swapped those out, bingo, Android Auto.
