Rubbing more than likely came from the dust shields getting bent. It's easy to do when removing and remounting the wheels. Then the dust shield makes contact with the back side of the rotor and makes a "grinding" noise.

The main point of the dust shield is to do exactly like the description, keep dust from components that reside behind it. The other main function is to help keep heat from the brakes off things like ball joints. A combination of corrosive brake dust and heat means that it'll eventually destroy the dust boots of suspension related components.
