I tested 10 different phone apps against my calibration unit (I have all the real toys to play with) and found a massive difference in most. Some were reading as high as 10db over the known actual rate. There were only two that came within 1db and only one of those had data logging that was of any value.
So, in summary, can we be precise enough to send a ship to Mars? No.
Can we get a reasonably close approximation for comparative purposes? Yes.

Mind sharing the two phone apps that came close to the real tools? Just curious is all.
