Not sure how insurance is going to cover a mechanical issue. It might cover other damage (for example if you blow a tire then hit something, it will cover the subsequent damage but not the mechanical issue (the tire) that caused the problem.
As @
murdoc says how did the driver cause the issue? If you've borrowed a car and the alternator goes out, you didn't "cause" the problem and you shouldn't be expected to fix it.
When the engine in my Astro "ate" it's motor bearings and tore itself apart, it was going to do that regardless of who was driving.
