Hyundai and Honda are the only ones actually trying to win over enthusiasts. VW and Ford just tarted up their economy cars and Subaru hasn't touched the STI powertrain in a decade, it's not even a competition these days.
The mk7 GTI is actually a great enthusiast's car. Can be purchased with a slick 6-spd manual and recently, VW changed the LSD from an option pack to standard equipment on all trims. (Essentially an electro-hydraulic clutch on the front diff to allow torque-vectoring between the front wheels.) Not to mention a stage 1 tune bumps the car to 290 whp and 340 wtq.

It might not be as raw or unfiltered as a CTR or VN, but the mk7 GTI is certainly great in its own right, especially if you can't stomach the looks of the CTR or the interior of the VN.
