That's understandable since they probably knew the slot for the headunit isn't double-DIN and wasn't sure if the stereo was double-DIN or not.

On the other hand, for those looking at getting an aftermarket double-DIN headunit instead, you can get these spacers from Subaru (link) to fill in the gaps on the sides.
