I'm not so sure about that. If we're talking about the RWD Celicas from the 70s-80s then I would argue that they are even more obscure than the AE86.
With the rest of the Celica generations, there aren't that many similarities beyond the small engine and being light.
In the end, I think Toyota could have gotten away with globally labelling the car as "FR-S" and it would have just as been successful.
