You are judging your actions based on historical knowledge. If drafted during WW2 you would not necessarily have the same outlook. When the US entered WW2 they were ill prepared and a skeleton force compared to what they grew to by the end. Much of that growth was through conscription since the country as a whole was against entering it and it was the only way to build fast enough. Don't kid yourself that every WW2 veteran went out feeling they were doing their duty.
