But therein lies the problem with laws. They have unintended consequences. Hot rods don't contribute to the issue, but that won't stop an overzealous cop from pulling over a hot rod and giving the driver a fix-it ticket for pops that would require pulling the camshaft to "fix."

A similar unintended consequence happened in Pennsylvania. Idiots were taking the doors off trucks that weren't designed to go doorless and driving around like that. Crap would blow out of their open door holes, they lost the use of their side view mirrors and there were questions about crash safety.

So PA passed a law that outlawed removing the doors. The clear intent was to outlaw removing doors from vehicles that weren't designed for door removal, but the cops went nuts and started pulling over Wranglers for having their doors off. Wranglers are designed to have the doors removed. One guy posted that a cop staked out the exit of his neighborhood, pulled him over and gave him a ticket. When he turned around and went back home to reinstall the doors, waiting on his street for him was a second cop who pulled him over again in his own driveway to give him a second ticket.

I never assume that cops will use common sense. Most probably do. But most rattlesnakes don't want to bite you, either.
