Yes, the modern crash standards will keep you alive in crashed that would have most certainly been fatal not that long ago. The cars do take way more damage but that damage absorbs the force of the impact instead of transferring it to your body.
For years people thought that bigger and heavier were safer but that wasn't accurate.
This video shows the difference really well.

Which car you would you rather be in? Keep in mind that the 86/BRZ is miles better than even the Malibu.
