I decided to upgrade my air filter instead of purchasing an air intake. Reviews online indicated that most of the air intakes available in the market today, revealed through dyno tests, that the HP gain is almost the same as that of aftermarket air filters (which is also significantly cheeper) due to the stock housing already designed as a cold air intake. In fact, some aftermarket air intakes proved to reduce HP (such as AirRaid lowering HP by 16)
I chose K&N since it achieves one of the highest HP gains (+5.7WHP) for an air filter on the 86, as shown by DSport Magazine's Dyno Test [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DbkmThHYMs"]2013 Scion FR-S Intake: K&N Replacement Filter Dyno Test - YouTube[/ame]
Since it is an oiled filter, there is a risk of affecting the MAS. Based on the reviews, it should be fine out of the box. Upon cleaning it, you just need to make sure that you don't over oil it, the recommended amount is 0.68 oz (20 ml). Looking at the description on the box, it usually takes up to 50,000 miles until it needs cleaning (depending on driving conditions).
The installation was really quick, it probably didn't take more than a minute. Compared to the stock air filter, the K&N filter is just a bit louder but not as aggressive sounding as having an air intake. You also can't feel much of the power gain since it only increased by 5.7WHP, but it still makes a difference.
