My wife uses a tarp-like system like the OP linked for the back of her Legacy (leather seats). She hasn't had issues with our dog, ~80 lbs., digging in the the covered portions of the seats. She does occasionally dig in to one of the door panels when trying to get her head that extra little bit out the window...

My WRX had cloth seats, so I just used towels but secured her with:

Both to keep her from being flung around during and to protect her in an accident. For the BRZ, I will probably be folding the back seats down and using towels + harness again. She's going to be bummed that there's no back windows to roll down.
