VIN's rarely correlate to the actual chassis code, this is true for both Subaru and Toyota. Toyota is not issuing any of their own chassis codes or model codes to this car, they are using Subaru-assigned codes across the board. ZN6 is the chassis code, FA20 is the engine code. It turns out 4U-GSE is not an official name for the engine.

FHI Model Codes for North American FR-S / BRZ:

6 = 2.0L DOHC RWD (Naturally Aspirated) (FA20)
A = 2012 Model Year, subsequent years will be B, C, etc.
Y = USA or Canada Destination / 2 = Japan Destination / K = Europe (?)
A = RA (Japan BRZ) or RC (Japan 86) Grade / B = Premium (USA BRZ), Premier (Canada BRZ), R (Japan BRZ) or G (Japan 86) Grade / C = Standard Grade (FR-S) / E = Limited (USA BRZ), Sport Tech (Canada BRZ), S (Japan BRZ) or GT (Japan 86) Grade
(Basically: A = Stripped Spec, B = Low Spec, C = Mixed Spec FR-S, E = High Spec)
7 = Auto (TX6A) / 8 = Manual (TL70)

Option Codes (California-emissions states may have different option code, I've not seen enough to know, plus I'm in Canada):

U4NT = USA Destination FR-S
U4NJ = USA Destination BRZ Premium
U4NG = USA Destination BRZ Limited

C0NT = Canada Destination FR-S
C0NJ = Canada Destination BRZ Premier
C0NG = Canada Destination BRZ Sport Tech
