How is it possible to lose coolant, if the coolant system in a car is a closed loop,

I have confusion as to why people need to top off their coolants from time to time. How is that a phenomenon if the cooling system is supposed to be a closed loop? I understand that if there were...

When the car is off and cold, the overflow reservoir shows a lower reading versus when the car is on and warmed up.

This is confusing because when the car is cold, it can be said that coolant...

Is the manufacturer's cold tire inflation pressure in regards to a constant value?

The reason why I ask is because tires can gain pressure (psi) when being driven (heat gained from friction which increases internal tire pressure) so I'm not sure what that number exactly entails....
