IM, intake cam, forged pistons + Na exhaust valves, better cooling, lightweight flywheel, minor exhaust work......

I'm with you on that. It's got to be mostly related to intake geometry - perhaps that's was the best fit for low end and high end power all while making it cost effective in the manufacturing...

The only thing I can think of would be the transmission and differential....
