Good to know I'm not the only to run into this. I ended up just tightening them in a star-ish pattern. Tighten until it go hard to, then switch to another side until it was ready to torque down.

Honestly, I don't know that the pump is the problem. At higher RPMs it's moving a LOT of oil. From my experience, the heads receive enough oil. Problem seems to be that the bearings don't.

Mine blew up post-recall. I don't think it was recall related since I also had an engine blow under warranty before the recall was done, but who knows?
