Mask off everything you don't want paint on. Paint over-spray gets everywhere no matter how directed the actual spray stream looks.

The difference in regulation between now and then is that car companies are using water based paints, instead of solvent based paints in order to bring down the VOC contents of their paint facilities...

I would wax every three months if you're in Indiana. The temperature extremes in the area and pollen definitely shortens the amount of protection you're getting from your wax.
