The convertible looks very nice, but I like that last part of the article about the hybrid drive for the extra boost. Ive seen Porsche do the same thing with their 918 I think it was. Excited about that. Maybe even trade in my regular FR-S when that comes out. I like the idea of an electric engine due to more low end torque.

Yeah. Im really exited about the more CO2 friendly performance model!
This is the first time I have read anything about a release date/year. 2015 could be a very good year! There have been rumors about a larger bore at 2.2l, with supercharger and electricity. That would give the car all the wanted throttle response with the much needed torque and more power. And also make it suitable for the future with lower emissions. But this rumor says no forced induction. Either way im crossing my fingers for 100g Co2 (per km, if not better) and 250hp combined with "heaploads" of torque from 1500-7000rpm and a better soundtrack. Could not care less for the cabriolet tough. That render looks good, but car just lost its balls when they cut the roof of it... But if I were into a cabriolet, that would probably be it! |
Can we finally say TOP DOWN TOP DOWN, SUMMER CAR?

"in order to contain weight increases" "Weight gains are understood to be small"
Here we go; new model = heavier :( So much for the keep it simple keep it light mantra. |
Although I've owned an MX-5 in the very recent past, I'm not a big fan of convertibles... Though I wouldn't mind seeing the option for those who are interested.
|
My BRZ isn't exactly built for comfort or reliability. With all the rattles I have now, I could only imagine the potential for wind noise and LEAKS in a convertible version.
|
They should have make a turbo charged version before the convertible. I heard people demands turbo all the time, have not heard anyone wants a convertible.
|
Can you add a hatchback to the mix... :happy0180:

If they build a convertible that will at least explain why we have a coupe with a trunk lid instead of a hatchback. That would be one less bit of tooling that Toyota would have to do.

I think the super-capacitor route is great, I don't see myself being an early adopter of the tech and will let others have the teething fun but I welcome it. What I'm most curious for is the 2014 changes, that blue action package prototype looks great and if the rumor speak comes to fruition - 4.10 gearing, mechanical diff, Sachs dampers, better sounding exhaust, BBS wheels and less weight (how I wish) for $27,000 msrp would be an excellent toy. This is what Scion should be - let it be a niche company, let them build their profit models (tC, frs cab, xD) and offer unique, quirky, fun choices (iQ, xB) like the super-capacitor and prototype/club racer-esque versions. Let the Subaru boys build a FI limited BRZ at $33k to slot between the WRX and STI. But that needn't come out until the hype of the current model dies down, 2014/2015 would be a good time. |
I would go for a hatchback.

The stock TorSen LSD is 4.1. The clutch pack LSD is 4.3 |

They did explain why it was a coupe; it was lighter and cheaper. Personally, I would go as far as saying a coupe is the more structurally rigid. |

Over that I would take a more practical hatchback style GT86. |

I good convertible and I wouldn't need to keep my tragic top mr2 :-)

surprised the 'purists' that cry about the car being 'ruined' haven't shown up in the thread yet.
I say give the people more options. |
Would be fun but i love my hardtop
|
Yeah, I'm burned out on convertibles. My last three cars were soft tops.

But seriously, zero f#%ks given about a convertible. Go ahead and build it; I don't have to buy it and I won't buy it! |
I think the mx5 might be the better deal because a vert will add about 5k to msrp.
|
I would not buy the convertible version of the FR-S but they should build it and sell it. Scion needs a convertible, even if it's $2k to 5k more. I am thinking they can make it about $3k more and sell every one of them that they can build.
|
I'd be more thrilled if they were bringing back the classic hatchback body we all know and love on the 86.

soft top = ugly.
i'd rather they just introduce a removeable hardtop feature like they did in EDM/JDM MR-S... or maybe even just a sunroof on the current hardtops. |

i usually dont like taking fixed roof coupes and making them convertibles. up until my first miata i thought verts were stupid all around. both my miatas have had hard tops but i cant express much fun driving around with the top down actually is. if you have an issue with convertibles (other than the amount of work needed to make them safe at a track) its due to image and insecurities and not the sport of driving. |

Although I don't support the idea, because typically folks who buy a convertible aren't the type of folks who care much about structural rigidity and weight (a.k.a non-enthusiasts), I understand it's a necessary evil to recoup some of the R&D on the car and make it profitable. I hope it doesn't tarnish the reputation of the car much. I can tell you that most of the convertibles will probably sell with an auto tranny.

On-topic Vert is a interesting idea. I wonder what they need to do the keep the chassis stiff & how much more weight as coupe? |
For everyone who is saying that convertible buyers are not enthusiasts please keep in mind that that the Miata is the 1# modified and raced car in the history of automobiles.
I have a soft top but I rock a hardtop 75% of the time. I love the idea of a soft top. I would take it off add the sway/struts to keep the rigidity and then get a sexy hard top for it. Most people who hate on convertibles have never driven a Miata. It is not a Mercedes or Lexus which gets sloppy as hell. It is a race car with the sky above your head. |
