Rust on Rays Lug Nuts

Hi All,

Has anyone experienced rust with their Ray's Lug Nuts?

https://scontent-lax3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...d6&oe=5CDAB06D

I've heard that Chrome might rust and I'm surprised Rays Lug nuts rusted. Been getting some moisture here in LA which is probably what caused it.

Ideas of cleaning and prevention? I was thinking about using WD40 to clean it and to randomly apply it to prevent it from happening again. Ideas?

Was thinking about just getting new ones, but not Rays when I saw this.

Yep it's totaled. Sell the whole car while your at it.
If the lugs are rusted imagine the rest of the car.
If you keep on driving it the lugs nuts will explode. They will explode in such a way that your balls will take major damage.

So, not joking aside clean them up, scotch brite it spray some rust protection. Don't worry about. Unless you care about how shiny freaking lugs nuts are then, eh. You know what to do at that point.

Are they "eBay" Rays?

I've never ever seen Rays rust like that.

:slap: - now, thar ya go - again - exaggerating things - :eyebulge:

Now you got ol @N1rve all fretted up.

NO, the rusted lug will NOT explode. However, they will rust and seize to the wheel studs, so when you take them off they will weaken the studs and the wheel will eventually fall off.

So, in order to stop the process, Bubba suggests you simply spray the lug nuts with chrome/silver Rust Oleum. Then next year, when it rains again, spray them again.

:D

PS - sorry you are out of civics to sell, there Mr.ac - :(

Hi err that's not real Ray's......Ray's lug is Auminium alloy A7075... Mostly Zinc & aluminum. Less than half percent iron. :iono:

It looks like an impact was pushed against the lug and either damaged the surface or left a deposit on the lugs. Clean with something like "navel jelly" and protect with either something like "fluid film" or re coat with urethane spray. You can do it one at a time and not have to jack the car.

No, I bought them off Amazon -- still doesn't guarantee that it isn't 100% fake lol.

These aren't the "Duraluminum" Rays.

I bought this kind.

I just looked up Naval Jelly, apparently it's not recommended on Chrome or Aluminum. I don't know if my lugs are Aluminium or not, but for sure -- it's Chrome plated. Think it's safe to have WD40 to clean it off?

I've restored rusted chrome many times with my BMX hobby. Don't use steel wool unless you want to scratch the chrome. I have had the best success with oxylic acid. Soak for a few hours, brush the affected area lightly (an old toothbrush works great). Rinse and repeat until the rust is gone.

Use the rest for your car in the spring

Ray's sells a steel version of their lug nuts as well.

I contacted the vendor, hoping for resolution but so far it seems like they are saying the chrome chipped off due to a socket, so it sounds like they gave me a defective socket.

Dude, exploding lug nuts and damage to the balls is a real problem. I have see it first hand back in 'Nam. I lost 3 buddies cause of it.

I think.....

Ether way I would not sell a Civic to some one that is worried a tad of rust in the old lug nuts. :bonk::word:

........go to ray's official japan site, you wont see one made in steel. :word: Unless we are talking about some ancient shit.

That's disappointing. My experience with Rays lug nuts has been really good, but I have only used the DURA Series and the RACING Series, which are different than those you have. I verified that what you got does appear to look the same as the Rays "Lock & Nut Series" lug nuts. https://www.rayswheels.co.jp/product...en&r=0&f=2&s=3

If you want to go a different direction, I think the McGard spline drive lug nuts and the CSG Spec lug nuts are probably very solid options that will hold up without issue.
