Would a 17 brz head unit work in the 2016 frs or would you have to get new wiring?

I believe there are some minor wiring differences, so it wouldn't be plug-n-play... but the bigger factor is that the 17 head unit is garbage and not worth upgrading to. Also, this post belongs in the electronics/audio forum.

I agree. I had a 14 FRS and the head unit was better than the 17 BRZ I have now.
