The movie was a disappointment.

I wanted to see more canon. That really didn't happen.
I wanted to see Luke be a bad ass. He was a bitch most the time.
I wanted to see Snope be a bad ass. He was easily killed.
I wanted to see Luke do some awesome training of Ray. He didn't.
I wanted to see Snope do some awesome training of Kylo. He didn't.
I wanted to see more use of the force. There was barely 15 mintues of it.
I wanted to see more use of the light sabers. There was barely 15 mintues of it.
I wanted to find out about Ray's past/parents. There was nothing to find.
I wanted to get more history on Snope. There was none.
I wanted to see less of the First Order, an organization run by whiny kids in their 30's. I got lots of them.
I wanted to get less dialog and more action. I got lots of bad dialogue.
I wanted them to pay tribute to the old movies, but to move forward. Instead I got animatronics and puppetering that looked unchanged from the 70's, and poor attempts at throwbacks.

I will continue to watch the series because Star Wars, but this movie ruined a lot of my anticipation for each release.

Snowflakes upset Disney didn't make a fanfic and made something moderately challenging to your hero worship.

Luke is still a good guy deep down, and was absolutely a badass flipping around that island without using the force at all, then reconnecting to it so strongly he projects across the Galaxy, Rey is the last Jedi and the order will continue, Finn is committed to the cause now, Hux and Kylo will be at odds, much conflict, much unknown, much excite.

This movie is a masterclass of subtle hints establishing the world and paying off, show the fueling of the ships in the opening as the rebels flee the first order, an hour and a half later, same graphic as the transports are fueled up and Poe freaks out. Red salt, dice, yinyang necklace, foxes, force projections, rebel ring, lifting rocks and brooms. Not to mention Finn's arc, the duality of Kylo in an apprentice role to Snoke and as a Master attempting to manipulate Rey, yeah they dropped the ball on Poe and the rebels except where we got to see him be a badass pilot finally, and the casino planet felt like a shoehorned plot to sell toys. Great stuff, solid filmmaking, better than ROTJ.

The only fanboy thing I want is for Rey to turn the Skywalker lightsaber into a double bladed staff, pretty sure that's what admitted Kotor fan Rian Johnson was angling for, but I'm not a writer, they can do what they want, it's all for fun at this point and has been for a long time. Take off the rose colored glasses, the originals weren't that great.

Old Yoda was the highlight of the movie.
Bad dialog is the foundation of Star Wars
"Governor Tarkin, I should've expected to find you holding Vader's leash. I recognized your foul stench when I was brought on board"

Who fuckin talks like that? A princess on a diplomatic mission apparently...

I gave this movie a 5.5/10 or so. Plot holes, useless subplots, only some character development, not enough plot development, too much unnecessary humor (especially during scenes that needed gravitas and had it ripped away by jokes). In general just so many missed opportunities.

I'm a huge book universe fan but wanted this to succeed and was willing to give it a chance because I thought episode 7 was a solid 7/10 (no pun intended).

Move in a nutshell.

"This is not going to go the way you think..."
"Let the past die"

Those were the main points the movie was trying to get across.

Plot holes galore though.
And I'm sure we can all agree the whole casino thing was 99% pointless.
There was sooo much awesome and sooo much WTF?!?!
Puppet Yoda was great. I heard people complaining how shitty the yoda CGI was.
Fkn kids these days... XD

I enjoyed it overall. It's VERY seldom I go and see a movie and can't figure out how it's going to play out.

Biggest plot hole that bugs the hell out of me.
What was stopping one of the pursuing First Order ships from making a small hypersapce jump ahead and doubling back on the rebels from the front?

6.5/10

Plot armor, what else?

The funny thing from someone who read a bunch of the books is that the Imperials had designed and operated new Star Destroyers called Interdictors that could block/stop hyperspace travel (as in literally pull a ship out of hyperspace if it happened to be traveling at light speed through the disruption field or whatever of the Interdictor). They could've easily added that to the film as a minor detail with no disruption and at least made that scene make more sense.

But nope, it's a "chase" with no perceptible strategy.

They are the First Order equivalent of the Twins and if they speed up to pass the rebel minivans just speed up and stay ahead of them?

"Let the past die"

Those were the main points the movie was trying to get across.

Except it reversed all of the strides it made towards those goals at the end of the movie. Rey kept the books, used the force to lift rocks and is absolutely going to rebuild the jedi order (with the broom kid, if not, then why take the books then? why did Yoda stop Luke from going in and checking on the books? Yoda and Rey both decided to preserve the Jedi order against Luke's wishes). Luke reconnected to the force and faced down the first order's army solo with a lazer sword. Poe is still a hotheaded flyboy, Leia/Han still has a hold over their son, the first order is still pursuing the rebels, the rebels are still rebelling and on and on.

The only thing they really followed through on in terms of "not the way you think" and "let the past die" was that Rose learned her lesson from Benicio Del Toro and saved Finn instead of suiciding into the battering ram. Everyone else is walking down pretty much the same path they were on before this movie.

They didn't really subvert anything at all, I fully expect the next movie to be the downfall of Kylo Ren as everything he said in this movie is proven wrong from the death of the jedi to his connection with Rey to Snoke's true level of influence to Rey's parents. (Although I do like the idea that Rey came from nothing, the ship has sailed on making these things about the Skywalker family forever). If this new trilogy has told me anything about the Star Wars universe it's that the Sith are often charlatans and manipulators, not all powerful forces moving galaxies.

What I thought was interesting is it seems like TLJ is taking place days, if not hours after TFA, I'm mostly curious to see when IV will take place, either large scale events have taken place or they'll zoom in and take a closer look at how the characters grapple with being on the run right after they've escaped the clutches of the first order. Either could be good, but I'm almost thinking it'll be the latter given how Rogue One takes place literally hours before ANH. It also means they can stretch this conflict out into another yearly saga, a-la serial adventures like Lucas always wanted

:barf:

I hope we get force ghost Luke though, I think that's the only thing that would make me mad, if Abrams didn't use Mark Hamill who is fucking brilliant. But I have little faith in Abrams doing something interesting, hope we get a new screenwriter soon.
