Add "We also offer in house installation of the complete package for $5000.
There is your $13000. You still need the engine and gearbox. They might source it, but you is paying for it. That they get to keep your old engine is gravy to them, and kinda explains the low $5000 install quote that I don't see covering their cost.
You WANT to think that the car you get back is a finished and sorted car that you can treat like you are driving it off the new car lot, but I assure you it is a bucket-load of money away from that. Remember that for that price you are driving away in a collection of USED parts traveling in close formation.
The 50k FM price you quote, is for a car that is actually very close to a new car that you drive off the lot. There are no used parts in the FM conversion. FM supplies NEW engine, gearbox and rear suspension. All with one year warranty. With the FM conversion you don't get to participate in year long threads about how to make the CAN BUSS gauges, AC and the OBDII "check wallet" light turn off, they come that way.
There is a good article on a FM client who flew in and picked up his car to drive back to Alaska. No issues and high praise for the car. Not gonna happen with your $13500 budget.
The final value proposition that I see is experience. FM KNOWS what they are doing; they are not still making this up as they go. That comes from having a critical mass of customers and sold kits/conversions. That bit alone has got to be worth $5000 a car in my world. I have yet to observe this level of knowledge with the nascent kits or suppliers to the Toyobaru community. Pretty sure it will happen, just not there yet.
At a wild guess, I would say FM has a margin of 15-20k in each car they do. As someone who knows where $$$ disappears in a company, I would say this is a reasonable margin to support the business case in order to keep both the company and the clients happy. Remember, just because I cant afford it, does not mean it is overpriced.:burnrubber: |
