We'll be at Buttonwillow on the 30th.

Do you want to sound fast or keep the oil cool? :p

All of them, and both? :p

Just wanted to report back here with our findings using the OEM 2015 WRX Oil Cooler on our Project BRZ. As suspected it didn't do as much as would be required for us on track however, if you aren't a track junkie and you only see the track 1 or 2x a year it may be a more cost effective option.

Ambient Temp- 78-80 Deg
Track- Thompson Motorsports Park
Mods- Koyo Radiator, Continental 225-45-17 Slicks, MachV Awesome Wheels, Eibach Prokit Springs, Hawk HP+ Pads, Brake Ducts
Coolant Temp Max- 215
Oil Temp Max- 265

This shows us that the Oil-Water cooler is taking out about 10 degrees from the Oil and transferring that into the Coolant. Prior to this we were seeing 195-205 Coolant and 275+ on the oil temps.

Hope this helps out some folks. We will update after we get a more robust cooler in.

Wondering if you ran the heat on the car during the sessions?

Ive been running an implementation of my own using the gr sti oil cooler plate on a rotorex sced car.

I see roughly the generally recognized 10 degree drop, but more importantly much faster recovery times. Especially with the heat on full (side vents out window center closed). In new england (not sweat your balls off hot ambient) im seeing peaks of mid 260 range, typically in the mid 250 range and very quick drops into the 230s and below when letting up. Last week (thompson) by the time the cooldown lap was done my oil temps were into the 220 range pulling into the pit.

The oe plates are absolutely not perfect, but they do have a clear positive effect
and introduce less risk of hose issues or punctured cores.

Haven't run the heat, it's hot enough in the car as it is! :)

With the Race tires, you are basically WOT all the time in this car so for me those temps get up to their max and just sit there for the entire session.

We are currently putting together a setrab setup to hopefully bring these temps down to where we want them 215 even at WOT on the track.

Assuming you haven't already done so, what's your thinking about going to a heavier-weight oil - is that something you'd do if you're unable to get the temps down to where you want them with a cooler?

When we went to the Motul 300v we switched to the 5w30 and even that was getting to 275+

When running that hot, I would feel more comfortable running 5w30 or even 5w40 as they will start to thin out at those temps down to a 20 weight anyway. Really though I would not want to see temps above 230 on track, and preferably 215 would be best.

I was thinking something along the lines of Red Line's 15w50 race oil. Would that kind of oil be inappropriate for this motor, boosted or not?

The problem with a 15w50 or a straight 50 is that you will have an increase in wear during warmup. The tolerances are setup for a 0w oil during warmup, so going to a 5w is probably ok, but much beyond a 10w and you are asking for trouble.

Really you want a cooler to keep the temps down. Keep logs or at least monitor the oil temps. If you only track a few times a year change the oil out before each event and after the event and call it a day coupled with the OEM '15 WRX cooler.

I get it - thanks!

That's an important point re: logging/monitoring of oil temp. That and oil pressure are the first health items I check after a session. I've never gotten a warning light for either, but they still get looked at every time.

After a session is really too late. You want to check that gauge down every front straight. Not that there is much you can do about it.

The P3 Cars vent gauge is good in that you get oil temp, coolant temp and can add in 2 analog sensors. We plan to put in an oil pressure gauge so we can constantly monitor that.

If you get a low oil pressure light, that means it's triggered the "your engine is going to blow" low oil pressure point. :(

Agreed.

I've got a mechanical gauge that gets checked on each straight, and a dash that will flash the shift lights at me when (IIRC) the pressure is below 30 psi and the RPMs are over 3K. I haven't had them go off, but if they did and it was safe to do so I'd shut it off, park offline, and hope for the best.

Has anyone seen the new avo Turbo oil cooler… Looks to be a decent unit with ducting similar to what MikeCSG showed on Rex's car :)
