Yeah, I'm burned out on convertibles. My last three cars were soft tops.

I say give the people more options.

Here I am! THEY'RE RUINING THIS CAR!!! :D

But seriously, zero f#%ks given about a convertible. Go ahead and build it; I don't have to buy it and I won't buy it!

SUB-FT86 11-24-2012 11:04 AM

I think the mx5 might be the better deal because a vert will add about 5k to msrp.

tripjammer 11-24-2012 11:47 AM

I would not buy the convertible version of the FR-S but they should build it and sell it. Scion needs a convertible, even if it's $2k to 5k more. I am thinking they can make it about $3k more and sell every one of them that they can build.

I'd be more thrilled if they were bringing back the classic hatchback body we all know and love on the 86.

That's cause it was a Mazda

having a sub 30k RWD hatch would dominate the market... i think only bmw makes a RWD hatch atm... I know a few of my mazda speed friends are waiting for a RWD hatch that doesnt have a BMW price tag

soft top = ugly.
i'd rather they just introduce a removeable hardtop feature like they did in EDM/JDM MR-S... or maybe even just a sunroof on the current hardtops.

That body looked like shit IMO and as a matter of fact the AE86 didn't look like a sports car one bit other than the low slung front end. The rest of the car looked like a carved box which IMO is unfitting of a sports car. They could've still made the car a hatch with the current low-slung sports car styling. My RSX is a hatch without the weird looking back end.

i agree with you on that body. the ae86 wasnt a sports car. i think its important to remember on this forum. there is so much talk about the purity of the frs and its ae heritage yet in the same breath can talk down on other amazing cars because they were based on economy cars.

i usually dont like taking fixed roof coupes and making them convertibles. up until my first miata i thought verts were stupid all around. both my miatas have had hard tops but i cant express much fun driving around with the top down actually is. if you have an issue with convertibles (other than the amount of work needed to make them safe at a track) its due to image and insecurities and not the sport of driving.

Here we go; new model = heavier :( So much for the keep it simple keep it light mantra.

And it totally smacks in the face of moonroof lovers. We were told a moonroof would ruin the c.o.g., what the hell does this do to it?

raul 11-24-2012 06:35 PM

Although I don't support the idea, because typically folks who buy a convertible aren't the type of folks who care much about structural rigidity and weight (a.k.a non-enthusiasts), I understand it's a necessary evil to recoup some of the R&D on the car and make it profitable. I hope it doesn't tarnish the reputation of the car much. I can tell you that most of the convertibles will probably sell with an auto tranny.

If you remember these photochops, you know you have been here too damn long :bellyroll:

Vert is a interesting idea. I wonder what they need to do the keep the chassis stiff & how much more weight as coupe?

merlin2111 11-24-2012 07:09 PM

For everyone who is saying that convertible buyers are not enthusiasts please keep in mind that that the Miata is the 1# modified and raced car in the history of automobiles.

I have a soft top but I rock a hardtop 75% of the time. I love the idea of a soft top. I would take it off add the sway/struts to keep the rigidity and then get a sexy hard top for it. Most people who hate on convertibles have never driven a Miata. It is not a Mercedes or Lexus which gets sloppy as hell. It is a race car with the sky above your head.

Yup... Although I was very happy owning the MX-5 because it was a pure sports car developed as a convertible from ground up.

Surok 11-24-2012 09:47 PM
