Help with loose wiring
 

Anyone know what these two orange wires are that got disconnected from this harness? The orange wires go to a little black box under the steering wheel. The photos are with the driver side panel taken off.

That does not look like factory wiring to me...
 

Note that the wires do not appear to go into a harness.

So, was this a used car? Did a dealer install an aftermarket alarm system to lower their insurance rates? What no longer functions on your car?

In a Delorean, it's right beside between the front seats but in a FRS I think our Flux Capacitor is in the trunk. Could be the wiring for that. Have you tried going 88 pmh yet?

No, everything is stock. The orange wires that you see got disconnected from the the yellow butt connectors, I pulled out that harness so that you could clearly see the orange wires that should be connected to the yellow but connectors. I tried to test and troubleshoot to see what doesn't work anymore, but I can't seem to pinpoint it

It screams aftermarket or add on to me. I don't think I've ever seen a butt connector in a stock car (auto tech son agrees).

The internet tells me that Toyota commonly uses orange wires for illumination circuits.

Do all your dash/interior lights work .. ??

It is common for dealerships to add simple anti-theft devices to new cars in their stock.

If the customer opts to not pay for the device the service techs within the service dept. can disarm/disconnect the device.

A little black box under the steering wheel certainly sounds like it could be such a device.

Those connectors (small orange and yellow wires) are definitely not items the manufacturer would use in wiring/assembly of a new vehicle. Tapping into the large white with black tracer wire is also not factory.

You have not stated what you think that 4-pin connector is for, and if it is plugged into the car's factory wiring ?

Yes, what is that plug go to? There is a day white/black wire like that in the ignition. Those splice connectors and the 2 plug type ones are definitely not factory. Car manufacturers don't use connectors like that

Yep, they all work.

The 4-pin connector was plugged into a 4-pin female end on the circuit board in that area, not really sure what it is exactly. I opted out on the alarm, but I think they did leave it in there, all plugged in. Going to try to go home tonight and pull out the black box to confirm if it is indeed the alarm. Thanks for your help

It goes to a female end connector on the circuit board in that area. Seems to make me think it is an aftermarket alarm from the dealer then. I opted out on the alarm when I bought the car, and I believe they did leave it in there. Thanks for your help.

Yup... they leave them in if you opt out, and a used car/dealer installed alarm was what immediately came to mind.

I HATE these things... they are a total sham and wrong on so many levels:

1) They hack into the factory harnesses and reduce reliability
2) They are TERRIBLE alarms and are used for two fraudulent purposes:

• To lower the dealership insurance premium - the dealership can claim there is an anti-theft device on his inventory- even the most casual thief can defeat these.
• To rip off the consumer - the dealer will charge 100s of dollars for an alarm so cheap he would rather deactivate it than remove it
