Totaled? Yay or Nay

I won't hear back from the insurance company and body shop till tomorrow but I'm curious to see whether (at first glance) most people think my car is totaled or not. Other than the obvious (from pics) there is some significant damage to the underside from the brush fire the car started (almost all plastic pieces under the entire car as well as fender linings and some things on the bottom of the engine bay)

Edit: I suppose to give you all a better idea of the situation I should state that the insured value of the car is $30850. Since this was a track event policy I was able to insure the car's value + all modifications I have had done. Which in this case included the 3M clear bra ($850), Innovate supercharger ($3200), RevWorks UEL Header ($700), and Nameless over and down pipes ($400).

:( That sucks dude.

It looks as though the body work alone would push you near the totaled point. Glad you're ok, good luck with the claim.

fire damage, air bags, mulitiple pounts of impact.
i bet my left nut its totaled, and if its not, id go do more damage cause that car will never be the same!

I bet it is totaled, which for you would be better. Better to have a new ride than to fix one that has had that much damage and effect the resale value.

Glad you are okay though, looks like a nasty little fender bender.

I'm guessing yes...does anyone know the typical criteria for declaring a car totaled? Is it damages costing more than 50% of the car's value?

WolfpackS2k 11-18-2013 10:12 AM

Only the passenger side airbag deployed, but yeah personally I'm hoping that the car is totaled. Doesn't seem like it would ever be the same again.

Here's the crash thread btw, with more info if anyone is interested:

Every insurance is different from the next as to how much repairs will cost as a percent of the value. Typically if the repairs are in the ballpark of 70-85% of the current market value they will total it out.

I know you were hoping it was totaled and judging by the pictures I'd say that it most likely is. If there is any damage to the wiring from the fire damage you can chalk it up as junked. Its unfortunate this happened to you but at least you were not hurt and had track day coverage. I guess the next question is are you going to get a new BRZ to replace this one and is the insurance company going to let you get your parts off it?

The main wiring harness doesn't appear damaged...BUT it's plastic encasing/insulation was melted through. I would also think that all the brake lines and wheel sensors (and lines) would need to be replaced after being exposed to the fire.

As to the parts, I'm not sure how that will work out. The value I had insured included all aftermarket modifications (parts value, not labor). So if the car is totaled I don't think they would give me those items.

Malt 11-18-2013 10:25 AM

Any damage at all on the wiring and I would demand that they get replaced. Fire does weird things to stuff and it might not look like it was affected, but it almost always is. Well at least you had the foresight to insure the value including those. Here's hoping everything works out in your favor.

I would say it is totaled based on the exterior damage, the bags going off and the fire damage.

surpised insurance isnt throwing a fit about you wrecking it on a track and making a claim.

edit** I saw you purchased a policy for the track as well.

I took out a track event policy with Lockton Affinity. It has nothing to do with my regular conventional automotive insurance.
