Carpeting Panels for Sound Deadening

Hi guys,

I saw the thread about adding insulation to the interior panels, but it doesn't seem like many people have considered adding carpeting to the exterior, underpanels, etc. I've thought about carpeting the wheel wells and adding it to a Verus transmission tunnel cover, would these areas affect anything? What kind of carpet or material should you use? Thoughts?

You're talking about under the trim panels? Carpet retains moisture too well. If you want to help with sound get yourself a big roll of Ensolite, a couple cans of super90 spray glue, some instructions on how to remove the entire interior and a weekend. It can make a pretty big difference. My car is considerably quieter than a stock BRZ. You'll never get to Audi levels of sound but it can make a big difference.

Not on the interior, I think that's been addressed very well. How about one step further? All these new manufacturers are using carpet undertrays to isolate road and tire noise. Higher end cars like Mercedes use carpet on the plastic wheel well cover for the same reason. Does this work? Maybe not carpet, if there's some sort of outdoor use foam as well. How about inside the hood and fenders?

Pretty sure this is what you're asking about. Way different from "carpeting."

Unless you meant like "carpet material" that's found in the wheel wells. I think that's more to prevent damage from road debris than it is for sound deadening.

I've seen astro turf used on inner guards.

Not for years though.

I wouldn't do it.

on a scale of 1-10, how afraid of you are rust?

I'm about to try this. I'm going to use foil backed insulation and seal the edges with aluminum hvac tape so no moisture can get behind it. I'm going to do the front wheel wells and see how it works. I just installed the oem underbody aero panels, I might take them back off and put some of the same insulation in them so they absorb a little more road noise. Will probably just put a little nearest the front wheels and transmission.

How do you like the exhaust tunnel covers? I've been thinking about getting that too.

Without knowing exactly where and what you are trying to damp, I'd recommend these products for interior applications:

1. https://tinyurl.com/ycat9a5l
2. https://tinyurl.com/y7zpdgzv
3. https://tinyurl.com/y78bf6c5 (messy and difficult to apply, but works great)

I have used dynamite or equivalent and ensolite with good results. Carpet is heavy and would add weight without achieving what you want.

Dynamite for vibration absorption

Ensolite or foam for sound deadening.

Think about acoustic or quiet rooms for music, tons of foam on the walls.
