Rear Deck Rattle? Fix it in 30s

I had a rear deck rattle. It was like a speaker rattling but was coming from the rear deck. If you pushed down on the rear deck on the side (passenger side for LHD, drivers side for RHD) of the rear window brake light it would stop.

Took car to the dealer and they did fix 1 and fix 2 on the Subaru TSB here http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21868 but no luck in fixing it.

Had a good investigation today following this thread from @jdubz http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14159 but removing the back lining looked too hard so I looked for an alternate solution and found one!

Here's how I fixed my rattle in 30s.

Open the boot (trunk for the USA) Look inside on the left (drivers side for LHD, passenger side for RHD). Just to the right of the boot (trunk) light under the rear deck you will see a bolt. A couple of inches to the rear of the car from that bolt you will see a small metal tax sticking out.

Bend that little tab slightly towards the bolt - I used my thumb but I suggest pliers, then you can pull the tab down while bending it in so that it holds down tightly the bit that is rattling.

Rattle gone! If it is still there but faint, bend the tab a little more.

Here's a pick of the bolt with the tab bent a little in. This photo is taken looking away from the boot (trunk) light.

There is another bolt with a similar metal tab by it on the other side of the boot/trunk (LHD passenger side, RHD driver side) but it is much thicker. I did push on that one too but don't think I bent it at all so don't think that one is an issue. but, if you still have issues you may want to look at bending that one ever so slightly.

I'm VERY happy my rattle is gone - hope it works for you. :happyanim:

As found by @XtremeMaC the tab holds down this sensor (likely keyless entry unit). With the tab loose this is what rattles. Seems that even if you don't have keyless entry this little unit is still sitting there.

Didn't need to for my rattle. Just bending that little tab worked.

I never really encountered it before because I'm usually alone with music blasting. Now I hear it when the music is low and I'm actually trying to have a conversation with a passenger.

Thanks for this! Will definitely try it today.

What is the boot lol?

What everyone outside the US calls the trunk ;)

nzer, that tab is exactly what's been rattling in mine since I did my exhaust months ago. I figured out what it was the other day and bent it slightly...all gone! You beat me to posting this!

I laid down in the trunk and started hitting the metal under the rear glass to find it.

LOL, that's what I did too. Amazing the noise it made right across the rear deck until bending the metal tab.

I know! Something so simple was driving me crazy

the rear deck rattle your hearing is welding slag caught between both panels in the rear deck, only way to fix it is to spray some lithium grease in the gaps and hit the spotwelds back together... ive fixed numerous 86's this way and have never had one not fixed... about 20 and counting

The last 2 times driving my brand new FR-S 10 a few loose, clunky noises have emerged out of nowhere. I haven't pin pointed the location yet, but it almost seems like the general area of the rear wheels or gasoline fill door.

I'll look at these tabs and bend them towards the bolts as suggested. I don't want to turn into a hypochondriac with this new ride. Only 300 miles on the odo.

That's a fix for a different rattle.
