Medium torque? Wonder what it was designed to handle.

s2000 trany so hopefully it will hold a decent amount of abuse

I assume the AZ6 can be tweaked per manufacturer specs. Can anyone shed light on what might vary from say the S2000 (apparently it is also used in the Miata, Rx-8 and IS-200/Altessa). I'm guessing ratios and shift logic and probably something affecting the feel of the shifting and shift throw length. Also consumer reports reports the s2000 tranny was far less reliable than the IS-200 or Miata. Any thoughts, sorry about a bit of a thread jack.

shift logic? that's a manual transmission... the logic (or lack of) is at the discretion of the driver.

From what I've read, the S2000 6-speed is not much like the AZ6 used in the Miata/RX8/IS200/RS200, so I'm not sure why it's referred to as being the same, as it is quite different both externally and internally.

The 86/FR-S/BRZ transmission seems most similar to the AZ6 from the other vehicles listed, it will likely share a lot of common internal design to the J160 used in the IS200/RS200. Perhaps designated J161 by Toyota?

From looking at the various cutaway pictures and other AZ6's used in various cars, it does look like it has been modified/updated since some of the older AZ6 models.

The diff wasn't. The tranny was fine even in boosted cars. The s2000 trans is hands down the best feeling trans I've ever driven.

I don't know much about tranny's, but all the reviewers seem to not just like the AS1's tranny, but love it. They say it's quick, short, and precise. I like my friends' s2000 tranny feeling. So an improved better version of that? Then, yes I would like that my good Toyobarunians peoples.

Um, if it's an improved version of the S2000's, we're in for a real treat.

I highly doubt it'll be better than the S2000. Reviews would have said that. Some said the trans was great but not perfect and similar.

S2000 trans also had to deal with 9000 rpm synchro abuse
