Spotted in Cape Town, South Africa.

No sooner had Toyota announced that it was working on an open-top version of the 86 when an eagle-eyed reader spotted a production-spec model here in Cape Town.

The white Toyota 86 Convertible was sighted in Paarden Eiland, Cape Town, by reader Allan Findlay. The car was being closely guarded behind security gates but Allan managed to take a fine trio of shots showing off the car.

Toyota had intimated that it will show off a concept dubbed the FT-86 Open at this year’s Geneva Motor Show and that a number of prototypes were undergoing preliminary tests, but these photos appear to show that the Toyota 86 Convertible is pretty much a production reality.

Let’s see what Toyota has to say at the Geneva Motor Show on March 5th.

Comes with new wheels, too!

DBacon1052 02-15-2013 02:47 AM

Nice! I like it, but I still like my hardtop better(:

dreamerl007 02-15-2013 02:47 AM

Looks similar to the wheels on the UK limited, and do I see fog lights too?

DuMa 02-15-2013 03:03 AM

eh hate these. i wish they made a targa top instead

WillBRZ 02-15-2013 03:06 AM

Targa would be so much better.

Zadkiel 02-15-2013 03:22 AM

Wheels look to big for production.

czar07 02-15-2013 03:43 AM

:barf:

Marloon 02-15-2013 03:44 AM

Idk, s2000 is nice but I think the FR-S looks a bit nicer

Alang 02-15-2013 04:46 AM

agree with @DBacon1052 I like it a lot, but prefer the coupe

beesmiff07 02-15-2013 05:02 AM

I wonder if those rims will be stock

ZetaVI 02-15-2013 05:25 AM

I like the wheels but I would prefer Targa also.

pumice 02-15-2013 05:30 AM

Those wheels are huge!

beesmiff07 02-15-2013 05:50 AM

they look like 22''

SUB-FT86 02-15-2013 06:36 AM

It looks like a cabriolet instead of a roadster.

mrlewistan 02-15-2013 06:40 AM

i speculate this could be a private party's build

leon78 02-15-2013 06:46 AM

It will be fat....

Vladror 02-15-2013 06:51 AM

as luck would have it, i took my GT86 for a drive on the franschhoek pass in South Africa today, and they were shooting a commercial for the convertible as i drove past.

nice take. but i wonder why theyre off the road...

tachi1247 02-15-2013 08:15 AM

both from an aesthetic and functional standpoint they should have dumped the rear seats. now exe have useless back seats and a useless trunk.

I second this. In my employment experience there wouldn't be a new (yes, even though they only chopped the top, it would be considered new) un-camo'd car running around outside until it has been officially unveiled at an auto show. OEMs are not big fans of having their "thunder" stolen before hand.

Or perhaps Toyobaru do not feel this is necessary? :iono:

Either way I think it's a fine looking car.

whtchocla7e 02-15-2013 08:29 AM

Wouldn't buy it.

dori. 02-15-2013 08:29 AM

looks pretty good. suck it down haters

...yes, the wheels are a bit bigger than we're all used to seeing, but it could be worse...

I'll keep my roof, thx.

Vladror 02-15-2013 08:50 AM

in addition: the video of the drive by
we weren't allowed to stop and take pics, as they were trying to be all secretive and directing traffic

i like it, i would actually debate on getting it, just to enjoy those long drives to the beach or for beautiful days. i am sure they would not let the feel of the car be compromised much.

jarviz 02-15-2013 08:56 AM

hardtop > convertible... always

Mandy 02-15-2013 09:19 AM

I still can't understand why people like convertibles so much. Maybe after riding motorcycles so long I've had enough of the 'wind through your hair' fascination. They just don't seem practical/useful, I'd rather have a targa or sunroof.

Foobar 02-15-2013 09:26 AM

It's not awful, but given how small the car is, I would have preferred a) they removed the rear seats and made it a proper roadster, b) Targa, or c) T-tops.

AX_FRS 02-15-2013 09:32 AM

So we probably won't get this in the US? Unless they start changing their Scion philosophy to have multiple trims of the same car, which supposedly they don't to keep cost down. I don't dislike convertibles, but I think I'd prefer the coupe for the FR-S. There is just something about being in a closed in cockpit that makes me feel a little more connected to the car.

naikaidriver 02-15-2013 09:35 AM

I wonder what the final weight of the car would be. Adding even 100lbs to a car this light would have a dramatic impact on performance. Not to mention the loss in chassis rigidity. I've owned two convertibles, one e46 BMW and one 1996 Camaro SS and I will never own another one unless the car was originally designed to be a convertible from conception.

I can't think of a faster way to ruin the balance of a car than by cutting its top off.

That said... it really is pretty.

Scott
