Worried about 1st track day oil temps

Heyo..

Just recently had a blast at SoW CW. After reading about oil cooling stories, now I'm slightly worried.

Only did 2 sessions with about 3 hot laps and 1 short cool lap each. I was short shifting at 6-6.5k for the long straights, and took everything in 3rd and 4th for the most part.

It was super hot out on Sunday though.. 105F+

Do you guys think I'm fine? I'll be doing an early oil change soon, and thinking about a UOA.

How do you guys log oil temps? Custom data logger? Does the OFT log oil temps?

I was at the same track day with a friend that drives a BRZ. After the track day he sent his oil out to get checked and everything came back fine. You should be OK but an oil cooler would be a great idea if you plan on tracking your car on a regular basis. It is also recommended to change your oil before and after a track day.

If you have an Android phone, download the Torque app, buy the blue tooth OBD2 connector and log from that. The app also comes with a G-meter and you can monitor a lot of other parameters.

I take more of the :iono: approach

From the posts I see the engine oil reaches ~270. While I see a lot of people say it's too high I don't see much in the way of why it is too high on a stock engine. DI seal issues aside (which occur on track and also almost brand new street driven cars) what makes 270 really bad?

I'm not saying it isn't bad and I'll probably get an oil cooler in the next year or so but what's the rush? I've done 5 track events so far without a cooler. Pop the hood once I get in the paddock. I dunno, just would like some more info.

Also all 5 days on same oil fill, changing it before and after each event seems overkill?

I agree, changing before and after every event is overkill, unless you are using some inferior oil. As far as an oil cooler, you'll be fine without it as a beginner, but it's a good precaution as you get better and start pushing the car harder.

I'm impressed you already have that blue series broken in haha.

I've never done a trackday is only getting 6 actual laps in, normal?

What do you mean?

Sessions range from 20-30 minutes generally. So divide average lap time. a 2 minute track will get you a number of laps. Then there are usually 4 sessions in a day. So multiply by 4.

There are some basic mods you should do before a track event, I'm not sure oil cooler is one of them. Although if you got the time and $ why not.

6 laps seems kind of short to me unless it was an evening lapping session or there was other stuff going on.

The full day sessions I go to alternate 30 minute sessions between run groups with an hour break for lunch. If I ran every possible session that would be 7 full sessions, with about 8 laps per session.

The track is 5km long and let me tell you it is tiring being out there that long. My last time out I only ran 6 sessions because I could feel I was getting tired and tired + fast driving are not a good combination.

Back on topic, unless your are FI, you should be fine unless you are really pushing the car hard.

If you are lapping a lot then I'd suggest changing it more frequently than the factory maintenance schedule and try to do a change a day or two before you hit the track.

Thanks for all the responses guys!

I'll get an oil change done and UOA soon. I'll be filling her up with motul I suppose, not 100% decided yet.

Oil cooler is definitely at the top of my mod list, second to brakes & tires.

The reason my sessions were short & low was due to me not wanting to get ahead of myself so I waited for instructors.

Didn't get heel-toe 100% down, so I didn't go into second which would have most likely shaved 3-4 seconds off or even more if I didn't need to point-by a bunch of drivers that were running in blue group with modded S2k's....

I got about 10 laps in, 2 sessions of 4-5 laps each. This is definitely not normal, if you hustle at the grid, you'll get maybe 4-5 sessions of 6-8 laps depending on size of track.

Doesn't hurt to have a couple of cool down laps during the session here and there.

Seriously, this. You don't need to do a quali lap every time!

stop listening to what people say on the internet. you will be fine. I have a P3 gauge, track my car alot ( 40+ days per year) and I am constantly in the 250-260 range and I go about 2500-3000 miles on Castrol Edge 0W30 (German blend). Sent oil out for analysis, nothing wrong.

I will respectfully disagree with subielife...

Long term running 250-270 oil temps on these cars will cause premature failure of the engines. You ideally want to be running the cars at 215-220 even on track. I've been logging my oil temps in the 260-275 range and for me that is too high.

We are installing the 2015 WRX OEM cooler to see what kind of temp drops we can see with that and then will try a few OTS Coolers that are external to see what they do.

The higher grade your initial oil, the longer it will handle the high temps. So if you are using a high grade synthetic oil perhaps a 0-30 or 5-30 and change it often while tracking, then you may be able to get away with it for a while. For the cost of a cooler, it's not worth it IMO to not do it. Also cooler oil in the 215-220 range will yield 5-6whp compared to running the car at 260-275 range.

Two questions:
- How much do you push the car?
- How much money do you have for an engine replacement?

When you go to the track on a regular basis, you need to make investments that will maintain the engine in good running order. Long extended intervals at high temps won't help... but again, if you're not pushing the car hard it will be a tossup.

My last UOA may be helpful:

Just got my latest sample back. This interval was 7300+ miles, with really low copper readings.

I also ran 1 track event during this particular oil change interval.

Next reading will be ENEOS Sustina 0W-20, as I got 2 cases for $100 (couldn't pass up that type of a deal!)

Got my UOA from ENEOS Sustina back:
http://i.imgur.com/sQnFuj4.jpg

A few notes:
  • 8000+ miles, including a 2100 mile, 4-day road trip.
  • 3 track events
  • Approx. 1/2 quart of oil added
  • Approx. 3000 miles on Cusco oil cooler (same as DIY Forester XT setup)
  • Changed oil filter once (due to Cusco oil filter install)

The high TBN (compared against regular ENEOS previously) is pushing me towards running Sustina beyond this upcoming oil change... this sample was pushed relatively hard with all the driving and track events, and the oil still held up well.
With my Cusco oil cooler I currently see 99-104C daily driving, and 115-123C at the track (depending on ambient temps). All on stock radiator.

Hey I need the motor to blow so I have a reason to give the wife for a rebuild.:bonk: Honestly if you are a newbie on track you will be fine but if you are getting serious about tracking it is cheap insurance.
I might be able to make it on the 13th, but not looking good.
