2nd Gear Syncro Problem

I've driven manuals for the better part of 18 years now. I'm used to 2nd gear in most of my cars being a bit stiff when it is cold out. 2nd gear in my FR-S is stiff all of the time. Most of the time it sounds and feels like it is grinding when I put it in gear. I haven't missed a shift of anything like that and my car has less than 1500 miles on it. What do you all think? Is this normal or is my tranny bad?

Lots of threads on this. It is not unusual. There seems to be no technical fix, though some have claimed that a change of oil type fixes all (snake oil perhaps?).

Yeah mine does it all the time, and when it's cold(not outside temp) its terrible.

Not snake oil, just a different transmission fluid.

I use this with great success. I use this in my race car, my street cars and my old AP1 S2000 with great success and never had any of the famous "2nd gear crunch" in my S2K that most S2k owners get.

One user has great success with this: Pentosin MTF-2

I dont know if my 2nd gear is worse than you alls or not. Its bad, really bad, and I dont know how long it will last in its current state. Yesterday, I did a granny shift from 2nd to 3rd. The clutch was depressed the entire time and the transmission started to grind really bad. I've never had a manual that behaved like this.

If I run the engine up high and shift fast it feels pretty good. Is this transmission used in other subaru cars?

mines butter...

I have followed the trick of shifting into neutral first before going into 2nd and it works every time. But 2nd for me is smooth once the car is warm.

I may replace the fluid with a Redline brand fluid, which completely got rid of my grinding in my Civic Si.

I haven't had issues with any gears, at right around 3000 miles. I used the Redline Shockproof fluid with good success in other vehicles.

The transmission isn't used in any Subarus, but is similar to the transmission used in some other Toyota models. It's made by Alsin. It is a brand new car, it shouldn't have any grinding issues really, and it has a warranty so I would use it.

2nd gear a bit more difficult here as well.

I don't mind it that much though.

I have similar issue. When I shift from 1st to 2nd and up shift to 6th on the high way, it's very notchy and it feels like it it will grind but it didn't. My car has 4500km and I replaced the fluid to redline MT90 but it didn't help too much !

Check to see if you actually HAVE any tranny oil... There's been a few cases where the car was delivered from the factory with no oil.
