Buy the same thing again? or do something dumber? YOU CHOOSE!

I have a 2017 BRZ limited, manual, with performance package. 21,700 miles on it. Quite fancy looking still and immaculate interior. I like it still. But that's irrelevant:

If i ever were to sell it to get something else, right this month is the only realistic moment for the value of it and for getting something in stock of anything 2019.

Help me choose:

1. Zero mile BRZ - same car, same color, 2019/20 though with zero miles. I would have to Order it. That sucks. It takes damn forever to get one of these cars. I duno how much longer compared to back then when it was just about 4 months for me. Ordering now could mean.... what? February?!

2. Veloster N with performance package. maybe 260 lbs of torque would prove nice. The mileage might be bad though. might explode? hyundai vs 100% japan? eh?

3. VW GTI SE - really nice interior and has an actual sound system. It also has a lot of hidden power, or not hidden as everyone knows that by now. 72,000 mile garauntee at the moment, kind of cool. Might explode.

4. Mazda MX-5 RF - machine gray to keep my theme of BRZ. Has no backseats. Some say it's a mentally deficient choice being that it is my only car. I dont have any kids and three girls broke off engagements with me in my history. Current woman is quite fancy and likes storage but she lives in her own house.

Money wise, it is kind of dumb to do. monthly payment wise, it would be less. Side note: did you know that a NEW RF miata is $46 dollars cheaper than 2017 BRZ to insure? and $53 less than a 2019? Kind of interesting.

Anyone have a thought? i dont. I want to get one this week or order another BRZ and wait again. :suicide:

LOL

I do this every couple of years

Out of your 4, there is only 2 I would look at, yes, the RWD's

After cutting away the FWD, it's what I need space/seating capacity wise that is looked at for my daily

A year or so ago I needed at least 3 seats, so, I picked the 86

Now, with all kids having a licence I would pick the RF MX5, maybe....boosting a ND is limited, alot, by the OEM fueling

In saying that, the Mrs would give me some strife, she never liked my NB MX5, but meh, she wanted a Mitsubishi ASX which I believe is rubbish, but she likes it, so yeah, meh

Would I swap my 17 for a new 86, no way, there isn't anything to be gained, what has changed between the 17 and the 19, nothing worth the swap IMO, unless you just want new because new..

Plus a waste of money, the money you believe that will be lost on your current car if you don't sell would be typical to the depreciation on the new car

Me, I'm waiting to see if a new and improved twin is released

Until then, or until 2021-22 at most, I'm keeping my current 86

Opinions may vary

why? 08-14-2019 07:22 AM

keep your current car. Zero reason to swap unless it is broken or you hate it.

Didn't see this option in the poll.
As nice as it is to get a new car every two years unless you are loaded and paying cash it is a rabbit holes that can lead to disaster. If there are changes in your circumstances that require a different car then the expense may be worth it but changing just for the sake of changing is like taking your money and ripping it up. As pointed out there is zero value in getting a new BRZ/86. If you want something else just wait until your current car is paid off, drive it for another year to get some cash built up and then go shopping. You will have saved enough money that you could broaden your search into some higher cost cars.

All in all trading two often just because you are bored can lead into an expensive circle that can become very difficult to escape.

I could see if you had a 2013 and wanted the facelift stuff. But in your case hell no, might as well flush money down the toilet.

RToyo86 08-14-2019 09:52 AM

I don't see why you'd want a newer BRZ over your current. You have all of the updated features, everything to lose and nothing to gain. You could put the negative equity you'd lose from trade and buy some go fast parts instead.

If you switch cars it seems more reasonable. The Veloster N is said to be one of the best FWD hot hatches on the market right now. I wouldn't pay that much for a Veloster but I also haven't driven one yet. Maybe I'd change my mind if I got behind the wheel.

Out of the choices the 19 Miata RF would be a solid option, as long as you can part with the extra room our cars provide.

That's a lot of bad decisions in one poll.

StraightOuttaCanadaEh 08-14-2019 10:09 AM

The Veloster is fast but from all the reviews I've read, it's quite anodyne and boring to drive. New BRZ - why? VW GTI - see what I said about the Veloster. Mazda RF - image problem and no space. I say don't do anything and go find a hobby to keep you occupied and away from spending money needlessly

Missing poll option: Insist the dealer takes your 2017 car in for the valve spring recall, have the engine blow up, then pay for it to get replaced.

Then trade the car in for a pickup truck.

NCtoBRZ 08-14-2019 06:53 PM

There is no reason to trade in a 2017 on a 2019 BRZ. Two of the options are wrong wheel drive. The Miata RF is the only potentially viable choice as long as you can live with the lack of storage.

Spuds 08-14-2019 07:08 PM

I drove a rental Veloster once. It was really weird. 4 doors including the hatch...

Don't do it. Hang onto your current one for a few more years. Put the money into a good detail instead.

HKz 08-14-2019 07:39 PM

yea pretty silly to swap out for another BRZ....and unless you developed RWD cancer or have an anti-sports car wife & kids, then I'm not sure why you would want to move onto FWD platforms....you could use what you would spend to get another BRZ on nice mods and extras like wheels, tires, suspension, etc.. The only car out of your list that I would care for is the Miata RF and if you really like roadsters perhaps more so than a hardtop coupe then going with a M-RF isn't too asinine....but personally I wouldn't dare swapping my 86 for one though one day a used one will be in my garage :)

...or perhaps you're actually more enamored with owning a new car instead of actually the driving part ;) I hear Mitsubishi is desperate to move new Mirages!

you must enjoy giving your money to subaru
