Fiberglass

My future son-in-law insists that the entire body of the FR-S is made of fiberglass. "Trust me", he says. There is no arguing with a 19-year-old. So, fellow FT86ers, is he correct?

My view is that the body and frame are made from steel, the hood from aluminum, and the bumpers from plastic. I'm not aware of even a single fiberglass item on the car.

So, who is correct?

(I searched Google and this forum for information, and all I could find are aftermarket fiberglass or carbon fiber items. Links to OEM body panel materials would be appreciated.)

You are correct, it would be way to expensive for car to be made of fiberglass. This isn't a Lexus LFA, or other supercar.

Edit: Here is http://origin-streams.toyota.com.au/...or/exoskeleton documentation.

Serious questions: can you make a ding on fiberglass? Won't it crack first? If not, how do you fix the ding?

Front and rear bumpers are urethane. The rest are metal panels. This is the case with most modern cars. Confirmed with my paint thickness gauge which only reads on metal substrates

I'm sure there is but I can't even think of a modern car thats all fiberglass. Recently did a Smart Car and about 90% of the panels were urethane which was weird

Correct, there is very few cars mad with fiberglass today, of the few most have moved onto SMC or carbon fiber due to increased strength. About the only thing fiberglass these days is cheap kit-cars.

Corvette bodies started out fiberglass then moved to smc and now carbon fiber (with aluminum frame) for the c7...

It can ding, to an extent. Depends on the fiberglass, how thick it is, etc.

Fix the ding? Bondo. 99% of the time it'll just crack and you'll see the whiteness of the fiberglass.
